Welcome

The Working People's Food Collective is dedicated to the best foods of the poor, immigrants, and working classes. Our goal is to offer a break from the current frenzy over molecular gastronomy, food styling, trustafarians opening artisanal cheese shops, and retired software executives cultivating heirloom tomatoes.

Instead, we give voice to ordinary people cooking ordinary food in extraordinary ways. We know the world doesn't need another food blog--but the many fine cooks who can't afford to write blogs deserve a place that brings their work to light.

Focusing on our home of Durham, NC, we'll explore creative, inexpensive alternatives to mass-produced fast food, alternatives such as the taqueria and the local barbecue joint. We'll find out if it's possible to provide cheap but high-quality recipes that don't rely on canned soup or require a bank-breaking visit to a trendy farmers' market. And we'll seek out the cooks we know who are feeding the people without making a big fuss about it.

Look for our first report in a few days!
